The Elton John Masibambisane Centre in South Africa, provides aftercare facilities, as well as running various programmes during school holidays and on weekends. The centre has opened its doors in September 2003. Since its establishment, the centre has worked closely with the community, schools and clinics. Community groups liaise with the centre when a child is in need and the social workers then follow up the request, talking to the family and the child. Part of the work of the Elton John Masibambisane Centre, is to visit families in the neighbourhood, particularly where parents are critically ill. The children do not live at the centre. They come to the centre after school, where, with the help of community caregivers and extended family members, they are given a meal and helped with homework and preparation for the following day’s school. The children are also able to take a bath or shower at the centre, and can also use the facilities to wash their uniforms. The centre also offers counselling to the children. Sir Elton John said: “The success of the Elton John Masibambisane Centre is an incredible template for what can be done to assist children to get into the mainstream of life”.

Sir Elton John wants to bring the musical version of the Australian cult film “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” to Broadway. Elton John wants to try out the musical on London’s West End stage before taking the show to Broadway. He wants to buy the musical as a producer. The original film is about two drag queens and a transsexual woman driving from Sydney to Alice Springs in a large bus that they have named “Priscilla”.

Elton John decided to write a heartfelt song about his long-term relationship with song writing partner Bernie Taupin, after having endured 40 tumultuous years together as a team. He wrote The Bridge. Sir Elton explains: “In the context that I sing it, it’s about having crossed that bridge and survived and having the two of us still being together, BernieTaupin and myself. We’ve been writing now for nearly 40 years together to chase the ultimate song and not to give up, but is also is applicable to anybody in any walk of life. It’s like don’t give up. There are so many people that give up and jump off the bridge. You just cannot be successful all the time. I think some of the stuff we did in the ‘80s and ’90 was uneven because there was all the pressure to have a hit record. If you write songs, you’re going to write unevenly anyway, you’re not going to write great songs all the time. But I feel with the last three albums we’ve written, we’ve written three great albums of work that we could go onstage and play now without playing any of our old songs, our old hits and really entertain people really well with them.”
